Global Issue: Deforestation

Let's talk Deforestation

Deforestation is the removal of a forest for land that will be used for anything other than a forest. It can cause a decrease in biodiversity, climate change, desertification-which is happening in the amazon rainforest, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and countless other issues.

Fortunately, we can help stop/reduce the destruction!

As a consumer you can...

  • Don't support companies and industries that are clear cutting and destroying the forest.
  • Avoid products with palm oil. Everyday the production of palm oil causes massive deforestation due to it's cultivation on huge plantations.
  • Eat less meat. Livestock requires a lot of land to raise and is one of the leading causes of deforestation.
  • Look for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) labels on forest products. This label means the product is made with forest-based materials from reclaimed sources or FSC-certified forests.

Plant trees!

Research and Join local tree planting groups that you can volunteer with.

Ways to save paper:

  • Always print double-sided
  • Think before you put paper in the garbage. I know that recycling bins are not always readily available, but those few extra steps to a gray bin go a long way overtime especially when everyone does this.
  • Stop/reduce usage of paper plates, paper towels, paper napkins, etc. at home and if you do use these things stop throwing them in the garbage.
  • Cut up single-sided paper you're about to throw away and use it for grocery lists and scrap paper.
